Perfect Crime

Kenny, the pool boy, had been watching the Westmeier estate for weeks. The sprawling mansion, with its glittering pool and manicured lawns, hid secrets he was determined to uncover. Mrs. Doris Westmeier, elegant and aloof, always seemed to have everything—wealth, poise, and a life of quiet luxury. Tonight, with Mr. Westmeier supposedly away at a late business dinner, Kenny saw his chance.

He crept through the side door, his bare feet silent on the cool marble floors. His pastel turquoise polo shirt clung lightly to his frame from the evening humidity, and his light pink swim trunks—adorned with a playful repeating pattern of small white elephants and tiny blue shapes—swished softly as he moved. Dark socks padded against the stairs as he ascended to the master bedroom.

Mrs. Westmeier lay asleep under a silk sheet, her chest rising and falling gently. She wore a long-sleeved, dark violet knit sweater-dress with a subtle ribbed texture that hugged her figure, its scoop neckline revealing just a hint of collarbone. Sheer black tights covered her legs, shimmering faintly in the low light from the bedside lamp.

Kenny's heart pounded. From his backpack, he pulled the device he'd acquired through shady online channels: a futuristic olive green helmet, sleek and humming with faint internal power, paired with silver earphones that gleamed like liquid metal. He carefully placed the helmet over Mrs. Westmeier's head, adjusting the straps. Then he slipped the earphones over his own ears, the cool metal pressing against his skin.

He closed his eyes and pushed mentally, reaching through the neural link. *Passwords... banking info... account numbers...* Fragments of thoughts flickered at the edge of his consciousness—dinner plans, a vague worry about her husband's schedule—but he pressed deeper, hunting for the financial details that could change his life.

The connection strengthened. He could feel her mind like a vast, echoing chamber. Just a little more...

The bedroom door swung open.

Mr. Westmeier stood there, his face twisting from surprise to fury. "What the hell—"

He lunged forward and grabbed Kenny by the shoulder, yanking him backward. The sudden jolt ripped the earphones from Kenny's head.

Kenny's body crumpled to the floor with a heavy thud, limp and unresponsive, the silver earphones clattering beside it. His eyes stared blankly at the ceiling, chest barely moving.

Mr. Westmeier shook the figure in the bed. "Doris! Doris, wake up! What is going on here?"

A wave of disorientation crashed over Kenny. The world tilted. When his vision cleared, he was no longer looking down at Mrs. Westmeier. He *was* her.

He blinked, feeling the strange weight of the dark violet sweater-dress against his skin, the subtle ribbed texture brushing his arms, the sheer black tights encasing legs that weren't his. His—*her*—hair fell softly around his face. There was no mirror nearby, but across the room, he could see his own body sprawled on the floor: the turquoise polo, the ridiculous pink swim trunks with their elephant pattern, the dark socks askew. Unmoving. Empty.

Panic surged through him. *I'm in her body. Oh God, I'm in her body.*

"I... I don't know," Kenny said, his voice coming out as Doris Westmeier's soft, cultured tone. It trembled with fear. "I was sleeping."

Mr. Westmeier's eyes widened, flicking between his wife and the intruder on the floor. "Doris, are you okay? Who is this kid? What did he do to you?"

Kenny, trapped in Doris's form, sat up slowly, the knit dress shifting with the movement. His mind raced. The helmet was still on *her* head—his head now—but the connection had shattered. He could feel echoes of her thoughts brushing against his own, but no way back. His real body lay there like a discarded shell, completely unresponsive.

Mr. Westmeier was already on the phone, his voice sharp. "Yes, police and ambulance—now! There's been an intrusion at 47 Maple Ridge Lane. My wife... something's happened. The intruder is unconscious on the floor."

Kenny stared at his own still form, the silver earphones glinting mockingly nearby. Sirens would be coming soon. He had no idea how to explain this, how to reverse it, or what would happen when the authorities arrived. Doris Westmeier's body felt foreign and confining, her tights a constant whisper against skin that wasn't his. All he could do was sit there, heart hammering in a chest that belonged to someone else, as Mr. Westmeier paced and demanded answers he couldn't possibly give.

The pool boy's perfect crime had become a nightmare he couldn't wake up from.
